Who Can Apply

The programme is aimed primarily at:

  • startups;
  • small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs);
  • individuals intending to establish an SME;
  • in some cases, small mid-cap companies seeking equity-only support.

Applicants should normally have a highly innovative product, service, technology or business model with strong scale-up potential. European Innovation Council

What Funding Is Available

Under the 2026 programme, the EIC Accelerator can provide:

Grant funding — below €2.5 million

This support is intended mainly for innovation activities at approximately TRL 6–8 and for further development before market expansion.

Equity investment — up to €10 million

The investment component is intended to support high-risk innovation, scaling, industrialisation and international growth. Under the 2026 rules, the maximum investment requested through the standard EIC Accelerator is €10 million.

Main Funding Options

Applicants may potentially receive:

  • Grant Only
  • Blended Finance — grant plus investment
  • Investment Only

The exact structure depends on the company, project maturity, financing needs and eligibility under the programme rules.

How the Application Process Works

The selection process is organised in several stages.

1. Short Proposal

The applicant first submits a short proposal describing the innovation, market opportunity and business potential.

Short proposals can be submitted during the year and are evaluated in batches. Results are generally communicated within approximately 4–6 weeks after the start of the relevant evaluation batch.

2. Full Proposal

Applicants receiving a positive result at the short proposal stage may proceed to a full application.

The full proposal includes a more detailed business and technology description, financial information, implementation plan, pitch deck and other supporting materials.

3. EIC Jury Interview

Successful applicants may then be invited to a face-to-face interview with the EIC Jury, where the founders and management team present the project and answer questions about technology, market potential, financing and execution.

What Kind of Projects Are Suitable

The EIC Accelerator is not intended for ordinary low-risk businesses.

It is designed for projects involving:

  • breakthrough technologies;
  • highly innovative products;
  • deep-tech solutions;
  • disruptive business models;
  • innovations capable of creating new markets;
  • technologies that private investors may consider too risky at an early stage.

The programme also provides access to coaching, mentoring, investors, corporate partners and other Business Acceleration Services.

EIC Accelerator Open & Challenges

In 2026, the programme includes two main routes:

EIC Accelerator Open — available for projects in any technology field.

EIC Accelerator Challenges — focused on predefined strategic areas selected by the European Innovation Council.

The 2026 budgets include €414 million for Accelerator Open and €220 million for Accelerator Challenges.

Important Practical Point

A strong application requires much more than an interesting idea.

The applicant must clearly demonstrate:

  • technological innovation;
  • market need;
  • competitive advantage;
  • scalability;
  • business model;
  • financing requirements;
  • team capability;
  • implementation strategy.

Preparation of the proposal should therefore begin with a realistic assessment of whether the project truly fits the EIC Accelerator criteria.

Conclusion

The EIC Accelerator is one of the most significant European funding instruments for ambitious startups and SMEs developing high-risk, high-impact innovations.

For suitable projects, it can provide a combination of grant funding, equity investment and strategic business support, helping innovative companies move from advanced development toward commercialisation and international growth. European Innovation Council
